It’s can be disconcerting when a temp job comes to a close. The pressure to find something new can be worrisome. But if you plan ahead it will help make the experience easier and improve your chances of landing the next position. We have some tips that will help.

Tips for Finding Your Next Temp Job

Start by reaching out to your recruiter. Recruiters are the best resource for helping you find a new position. Remind the recruiter of when you’re available and what you’re looking for so they can begin searching on your behalf. Also seek out feedback on how they think the job went, your performance, and any feedback from your managers.

Next, start networking. Reach out to your coworkers to see where they’re going next or if they know of anything that’s available. Remember, they know your work style and interest because they’ve been on your team.

Also, speak to your manager. Your supervisor should know of other positions in the company or in the industry. Make sure you thank them for the work opportunity, no matter your personal feelings about the manager or the job. If you’d like to continue working with the company, let the manager know of your interest. If you feel like you’ve done a good job and like the company, there may be an additional spot for you down the line.

Be proactive. A month or two before the contract ends, update your resume with your current experience. Make sure there are no typos and that the contact information listed is accurate. Post the resume on some of the free job boards like Indeed, Monster, and Glassdoor. Share a fresh copy with your recruiter and let them get started on the search.

Finally, update your LinkedIn profile and click the “open to work” box so that other recruiters will see you’re coming available. If you have a solid LinkedIn network, go through it carefully and look for connections that are connected to industries and companies you’d like to work in. Reach out to these people and let them know you’re going to be looking for a new contract or a full-time job when the current employment agreement expires. You can also reach out to your coworkers on LinkedIn to see if they would be willing to give you a reference on that platform.
